“THIS IS A PROJECT THAT I HAVE SEEN THAT ITS DESIGNERS ARE VERY DEDICATED IN IMPLEMENTING”

This is the first time that I have participated in a project with foreign financial support. I have been working in the industry for 25 years, participating in many projects but this is the first ever one that mentions about the quality development and enhancement of Robusta coffee in the Central Highlands Region of Viet Nam. Therefore, I am very happy with this idea. And I have the opportunity to support the Bahnar community here in post-harvest processing of coffee for a better quality.

I’m glad that the project has chosen this community in the region. Although still having to upgrade quite a number of processes, the community members demonstrate high commitment and diligently follow the guidance step by step. The thing I want the most is that after this training, the people here can be able to pick some appropriated processing methods, and the Project and myself will help them choose simple & easy-to-do coffee processing methods to implement that will enhance the quality of the coffee. There will be another training to assess how deep is the coffee processing knowledge of farmer participants and from there we will adjust to help them improve it further.

Unlike other projects that only organize one-time classes and do not monitor neither build on the results. I find that designers of this Project are very dedicated in implementing. Through this project, we can see that V-SCOPE does very well. For communities with low starting point, the project chooses to teach them simple techniques on how to process efficiently coffee. In Ea Tan Cooperative, where processing techniques are already quite proficient, the project focuses on teaching sophisticated roasting techniques, product development, and packaging. I have personally seen that if this Project can be replicated in the Central Highlands of Viet Nam and other coffee regions, farmers will benefit a lot from it.

The Project “Increasing the sustainability, productivity and economic value of coffee and black pepper farming systems and value chains in the Central Highlands region of Viet Nam” (V-SCOPE) has a vision of improving livelihoods among smallholders and rural communities, while managing natural resources and producing agri-food products more sustainably, and fostering more inclusive agri-food market chains by working with the private sector and farmers. The Project is funded by Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and led in implementation by the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF - also known as World Agroforestry), in collaboration with the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD) who also provides in-kind contribution through staff seconded to the Project.
